Doing Keto over 40? Women, read this first!

We all want to look and feel our best, but once we start aging, keeping the weight off can be something of a challenge. For a lot of women, a ketogenic diet has provided the solution, and we’re here to tell you how to lose those stubborn pounds in a safe and sustainable way.

Going Keto Over 40

They say that with age comes wisdom, but to be fair, so do other things such as hot flashes, hormonal imbalances, low energy, etc. Additionally, if you have weight-related issues, you’re probably feeling down in the dumps more often than not.

In fact, most women over 40 will tell you that it’s far more difficult for them to lose weight now than it was ten years ago when they were still in their 30’s. While there may be some truth to this, it’s far from impossible.

The best diet for women over 40

If you’ve been exercising, watching your calorie intake, and generally taking good care of yourself, yet the number on your scale just won’t budge, your scale may be broken! All jokes aside, you’re probably eating the wrong kind of food.

Most women tend to focus on the calories they’re consuming, rather than the macros. For example, some foods cause inflammation and can create hormonal imbalances. That’s why the keto diet is one of the best ones for regulating your insulin levels, estrogen, and other hormones.

How to get started

Before jumping into the keto lifestyle, it’s best if you go alkaline. That means consuming cruciferous green, leafy vegetables, and citrus fruits before going full keto.

If you immediately start with a keto diet, your body will hold onto fat due to chronic inflammation.

The next step is to get rid of any food and drink that can create adrenal stress. These include caffeine, any kind of alcohol, and chocolate. Before you go into panic mode, remember that this is only temporary. You won’t have to say goodbye to chocolate forever, but you will have to steer clear of it for a few weeks.

Don’t fear fats

The great thing about the keto diet is that, unlike most of its counterparts, you actually feel full after each meal. That’s because you should eat 80%–90% fat.

Don’t worry; fat just sounds like it’s bad; however, it’s not. In fact, when you’re on the keto diet, you should buy plenty of delicious avocados, nuts, and fish. You can add keto friendly snacks in moderation as well.

Once you get into your new keto lifestyle, it’s time to add some exercise into the mix!

HIIT rather than cardio

High-intensity interval training does wonders when it comes to losing weight. There’s no need for intense cardio exercises when HIIT shows better results.

After a few weeks of training, you’ll notice an incredible difference not only in your weight but in the shape of your body as well!

Additional tips

This is just a quick intro into keto for those considering it, but there is a lot more to learn beyond what we’ve shared here.

In addition to the above points, if you want the best results, stick to these tips:

  • Remember to get enough sleep
  • Buy urine strips to see if you’re in ketosis
  • Find something that helps you relieve stress (e.g., Yoga, Pilates, etc.)
  • Keep a food diary
  • Read and learn about keto daily. Reddit’s r/keto is a great place to start.

Remember to stick to your new keto lifestyle, and you’ll not only lose weight, but you’ll easily keep it off in the long run!
